What's Inside
I’ll be straight with you — most Xiamen guides are outdated or copied from each other. After leading dozens of tours here, I’ve compiled the real deal. Let’s save you time, money, and frustration.
Gulangyu Island: Don’t Make These Mistakes
Gulangyu is the must-visit, but also the biggest tourist trap if you’re not careful. Here is the catch: the ferry system is confusing, and the island gets insanely crowded by 10 AM.
How to beat the crowds: Book the earliest ferry from Dongdu International Ferry Terminal. The first departure is at 7:10 AM. Take the 7:10 or 7:30 boat — you’ll have the island almost to yourself until 9 AM.
Please note: foreign passport holders cannot buy tickets online via the official WeChat mini-program (it requires Chinese ID). You must buy at the terminal counter or ask your hotel to book for you. I always tell my clients to ask the hotel concierge — it saves a 20-minute queue at the terminal.
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Ferry ticket price (round trip) | 35 RMB per adult (no child discount available at counter; children under 1.2m free) |
| Booking required? | Yes, buy at Dongdu Terminal (no advance online purchase for foreigners). |
| Address | Dongdu Ferry Terminal, No. 1 Dongdu Road, Xiamen |
| Operating hours | First departure 7:10, last return from Gulangyu 17:30 (winter) / 18:30 (summer) |
| Suggested visiting time | 4-5 hours (arrive early, leave by 1 PM to avoid crowds) |
| Best photo time | 8-10 AM at Sunlight Rock (facing east) |
Nanputuo Temple & Xiamen University
These two are next to each other, so combine them. Nanputuo Temple is free, but here's the thing: it’s a working Buddhist temple, not a silent museum. You'll hear chanting and smell incense — embrace it. The vegetarian restaurant inside is decent but cash-only (no foreign cards). I always bring 50 RMB in small bills.
Right next door is Xiamen University. They say it's the most beautiful campus in China. I think it’s true — the lake, the traditional buildings, the palm trees. But to enter, you need to show your passport at the gate. No reservation needed. The only catch: it's limited to 1000 visitors per day in peak season, so go before 10 AM.
Xiamen Food: Where Locals Actually Eat
You’ll see a ton of restaurants near Zhongshan Road. Most are overpriced and cater to tourists. Let me point you to three places I take every guest.
1. Yan Xuan Noodle
Address: 78 Siming South Road (branch near Nanputuo).
Signature: Sha Cha Noodles (satay soup base with seafood). Sweet, creamy, mildly spicy. I always add pork intestine and tofu puff.
Price: 15-25 RMB per bowl.
Crowd: Busy at lunch; wait about 10 minutes.
Payment: WeChat Pay or cash only. No English menu, but point at what others have.
2. Lin’s Oyster Omelet
Address: 56 Zengcuoan village (inside the art district).
Grab it fresh: the oysters are plump, the starch is crispy, and they add a sweet chili sauce.
Price: 12 RMB.
Note: they only accept cash. I’ve seen tourists argue over WeChat Pay — don’t be that person.
3. Wu’s Seaweed Soup
Address: 22 Longtou Road, Gulangyu Island.
This is a hidden gem. Only locals know. The seaweed is from Fujian coast, the soup is light and refreshing. Perfect after a morning of walking.
Price: 8 RMB. Cash only.
24-Hour Itinerary: The Ultimate Sprint
Got only one day? No problem. I designed this to hit the highlights without killing you.
7:00 AM – 12:00 PM: Gulangyu Island
Take the 7:10 ferry from Dongdu. Walk to Sunlight Rock (skip climbing — view from Haoyue Park is better). Stroll through the quiet alleys. Grab a seaweed soup at Wu’s. Be back on the ferry by 11:30 AM to avoid the crush.
12:30 PM – 2:00 PM: Lunch near Zhongshan Road
Head to Yan Xuan Noodle.
Transport: From Dongdu ferry terminal, it’s a 15-minute bus ride on line 2 (get off at Zhongshan Road stop). If you’re tired, taxi costs about 15 RMB.
2:00 PM – 4:30 PM: Nanputuo Temple & Xiamen University
Bus line 29 from Zhongshan Road takes 20 minutes. Visit the temple, then walk to Xiamen University (passport needed). Enjoy the campus vibe.
4:30 PM – 6:00 PM: Walk along the Ring Road
From Xiamen University, walk south to the Huandao Road seaside promenade. Excellent sunset views. If it’s too hot, grab a coffee at Taiwan Coffee Street nearby.
6:00 PM – 8:00 PM: Dinner in Zengcuoan
Take bus 122 to Zengcuoan (15 minutes). Find Lin’s Oyster Omelet. After dinner, browse the art shops. It’s touristy but fun.
Flexibility note: If it rains, swap the seaside walk for Xiamen Museum (free, modern exhibits) near the university. For extreme heat (above 35°C), do Gulangyu in the early morning, then spend 1-4 PM in air-conditioned shopping malls like SM City Xiamen (take metro line 1 to Wuyi Square).
Where to Stay: Picks for Every Budget
| Hotel | Area | Price Range (per night) | Best For | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pullman Xiamen (5-star) | Xiamen Island, near Wuyi Square metro | 600-900 RMB | Business, luxury travelers | Strong Wi-Fi, English-speaking staff, gym. 5 min walk to metro. |
| Mercure Xiamen Downtown (4-star) | Zhongshan Road area | 350-500 RMB | First-time visitors, couples | Great location, but noise from street. Ask for a high floor. Breakfast includes local dishes. |
| Xiamen International Youth Hostel | Near Nanputuo Temple | 80-120 RMB (dorm), 250 RMB (private) | Backpackers, solo travelers | Clean, basic. They can store luggage. Limited English. 24-hour convenience store across street. |
My advice: Avoid hotels on Gulangyu Island unless you like lugging suitcases up steep stairs. The island has no cars, and porters charge 50 RMB per bag. Stay on Xiamen Island and day-trip.
